SHERLOCK & SEGAR STATUE

Dedicated on Dec. 7, 2019

THE FIRST PERMANENT GRANITE STATUE

HONORING THE MASTER DETECTIVE

SHERLOCK HOLMES

ERECTED IN THE AMERICAS

Each donor has their Name/Inscription FOREVER paired with one of the Adventures penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ... a permanent etching on one of the 30 Pavers surrounding the Life Size monument to the Eternal Sleuth.

The statue was ceremonially unveiled on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019 At 10 AM.  Rep. Nathan Reitz  read the 2019 Illinois House Of Representative's Resolution honoring Popeye's creator, Elzie Segar, on his 125th Birthday (also mentioning his compelling interest in Sherlock Holmes) AND commending the Popeye & Friends Character Trail for its favorable impact on our region. Our Sherlock's visage borrows the countenance of Elzie Segar ... a tribute to his compelling interest in The Detective. Segar was one of the earliest Americans to promote the "Sherlockian" subculture and imagery, and he did so in his Iconic , Internationally Syndicated  cartoon series, "Thimble Theatre" (1919), which featured Popeye's premiere in 1929.

The Sponsor Pavers complete the image of Sherlock & Segar standing in the middle of a magnifying glass lens. The rough concept art, the sculptor's clay maquette, and the final statue image shows the project's progression.

This statue (as THE Detective) showcases the 26th character attributed to Segar's creative genius that has been erected in his birthplace, Chester, Illinois. Annually our collection of statues brings thousands of tourists from all across the globe (96 countries to date). For more information regarding the full Trail please visit this tab
